ITIN
ITIN Application for Non-Residents
Get your Individual Taxpayer Identification Number from the IRS. We check whether you really need one, prepare Form W-7 with you and guide you through every document.
Quick answer
An ITIN is a tax processing number the IRS issues to people who need a US taxpayer ID but aren’t eligible for a Social Security Number. You don’t need one to form a US LLC or get an EIN — you need it when you personally have a US tax filing requirement or another reason the IRS accepts.
You don’t need an ITIN to form your US LLC, get your EIN or apply for Stripe — Stripe says a non-US representative without an SSN or ITIN can give their local tax ID instead. If you don’t need one, we’ll tell you.
Why It Matters
Why Would You Need an ITIN?
Your EIN identifies your company. An ITIN identifies you, the owner, on US tax filings.
File a US Tax Return
If your LLC earns income effectively connected with a US trade or business, you generally file Form 1040-NR as an individual — and you need an SSN or ITIN to do it.
Claim Tax Treaty Benefits
A US taxpayer ID can be needed to claim a reduced rate under a tax treaty between the US and your country.
US Financial Services
Some US banks and financial providers ask account holders for an individual taxpayer ID. Where an ITIN is accepted, it fills the gap left by not having an SSN.
Your Personal US Tax ID
An ITIN belongs to you personally — separate from your company’s EIN — for any US tax filing you need to make.

FAQ
Common Questions
Do I need an ITIN to form a US LLC?
No. You can form a US LLC and get its EIN without an ITIN. You need an ITIN only if you personally have a US tax filing requirement or another reason accepted by the IRS.
Is an ITIN the same as an EIN?
No. An EIN identifies a business such as your LLC (Form SS-4). An ITIN identifies an individual (Form W-7). They are separate numbers with separate applications.
How long does it take to get an ITIN?
The IRS says to allow about 7 weeks, or 9 to 11 weeks during tax season (January 15 to April 30) or if you apply from overseas.
Do I have to send a tax return with my ITIN application?
Usually yes. Form W-7 is generally submitted together with the federal tax return it is needed for, unless you qualify for one of the IRS exceptions.
